“Good” Friday

We have a very strange name for the day Jesus died. That saddest day of the year, what do we call it? Good Friday. Have you ever thought about that name? The day when an innocent man was condemned and executed. Good? The day when our sins and our guilt led to the death of the Son of God. Good?

Yes! More than any other day of the year, as we watch Jesus’ death for us on the cross, we see God’s great love for us. Jesus’ disciple John—one of the few followers of Jesus who stood at the foot of Jesus’ cross—writes, “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10). God takes sin seriously. God takes our sin seriously. But there is someone who loves you so much that he suffered and died for our sins. It’s Jesus. What would you call that? Good! Jesus’ death has brought forgiveness and eternal life to you and me.

Christians for hundreds of years have prayed a simple prayer on Good Friday: “We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.” Amen! May God bless your Good Friday as you remember Jesus’ great love for you.
